A SEVEN-member delegation from the Women’s Institute of Brunei Darussalam departed for the UK on August 16 to attend the Associated Country Women of the World (ACWW) 28th Triennial Conference in Coventry.

The conference, themed ‘Working Together For a Better Future’, is being held at the University of Warwick from August 17-24.

The delegation is being led by the Honorary Secretary of the institute, Hjh Shamsiah Abd Latif.

She said the highlight of the event will be the election of the ACWW Executive Committee members and board members for the 2016-2019 session.

Hjh Shamsiah said she hopes the delegation will gain insightful knowledge and experience through the conference.

She said the Women’s Institute has been sending delegations to both ACWW World Conferences and ACWW Area Conferences.

The institute hosted two ACWW Area Conferences for Southeast Asia and the Far East in 1991 and 2004 respectively.

The Women’s Institute joined the ACWW in 1965 and became a constituent member society at the Vancouver Conference in 1983.

The ACWW is an association of women-led societies and groups that work together for the shared vision of an improved quality of life for women and communities worldwide.

The association believes that through cooperation and understanding, it can empower its members to create opportunities for women to exercise more power, make better decisions and change their own lives for the better.

The ACWW’s concerns are the relief of poverty, relief of sickness, the protection and preservation of health as well as the advancement of education.

With 420 member societies in 73 countries, the association gives a voice to over nine million rural and non-rural women.

The next ACWW Triennial Conference will take place in April 2019.
