INDONESIAN nationals living in Brunei were in high spirits last night as they celebrated their 71st Independence Day at a reception held at the Songket Ballroom of the Rizqun International Hotel.

Nurul Qomar, the Indonesian Ambassador to Brunei Darussalam, said that since diplomatic ties were established 32 years ago, Brunei and Indonesia have always maintained solid cooperation in the fields of politics, economy and defence.

She also highlighted the strong cooperation between the two countries in the fields of sociocultural exchanges and education, adding that educational cooperation has been “steadily progressing.”

“Indonesia and Brunei Darussalam have particularly managed to boost broader cooperation and understanding through academic cooperation, scholarship programmes and cultural exchanges as well as visits of government officials at all levels,” she said in her speech.

She added that strong cooperation can be seen in the field of higher education in particular as there are 52 Bruneian students currently in Indonesia participating in exchange programmes as well as to study in “prominent Indonesian universities.”

Meanwhile, there are 28 Indonesian students in Brunei currently undergoing their graduate and postgraduate studies at a number of the sultanate’s universities, she said.

“We hope that the number of Bruneian students in Indonesia and vice versa will continue to rise as we further expand the education cooperation between Indonesia and Brunei Darussalam.”

The ambassador went on to laud Brunei’s government for receiving about 60,000 Indonesians to work and reside in the sultanate, adding that their presence in Brunei is beneficial for both countries.

“For this reason, I would like to convey my confidence that Indonesia and Brunei Darussalam will continue to enjoy stronger friendship and cooperation that will contribute positively in advancing stability, peace and prosperity in the region,” she added.

The reception also saw a cake-cutting ceremony with Minister of Education Yang Berhormat Pehin Orang Kaya Indera Pahlawan Dato Seri Setia Hj Suyoi Hj Osman and envoys from ASEAN member states.
