MEMBERS of the public were yesterday advised to take note of road closures and regulations that will be in place in the capital this Sunday when the Brunei Darussalam Regatta 2016 will take place at the Royal Wharf.

During a press conference held at the Ministry of Home Affairs (MoHA) yesterday, Md Baharin Shah Hj Abu Bakar, a representative of the Traffic Control and Investigation Department (JSKLL), said that several roads leading to Jalan McArthur, Jalan Pretty and Jalan Pemancha will be closed before and during the regatta.

Several traffic light areas along Jalan RIPAS and Jalan SOAS, as well as the entire of Jalan McArthur and Jalan Kianggeh will also be regulated by traffic police during this time, he said.

There will also be restrictions against parking in the main capital areas near the Royal Wharf. The JSKLL will begin putting up signs about the restrictions starting Saturday, he added.

Md Baharin urged members of the public to practise tolerance with all road users, as well as to cooperate and comply with any instructions issued by traffic police on the said road areas on Sunday and further added that legal action will be taken against those who do not follow the regulations.

Meanwhile, Director of Fire and Rescue Department Yahya Hj Abdul Rahman said that various agencies – including the Royal Brunei Police Force, the Marine Department and medical teams from the Ministry of Health – will be present to respond efficiently should there be any race-related incidents this Sunday, to ensure that the races run as smoothly and safely as possible.

He also requested for members of the public to abide by instructions or restrictions by relevant authorities who will be on duty, including those who will be travelling via boat to Kg Ayer as there will be designated routes or lanes. They will have to follow that to avoid any clash with the regatta race routes.

Following the press conference, Acting Deputy Director of Information Department Noorassidah Hj Ali Omar presented posters about the Regatta Brunei Darussalam 2016 to MoHA Deputy Permanent Secretary Hj Idris Hj Md Ali, who is the deputy chair of the regatta’s executive committee.

Hj Idris then presented regatta posters to public relations officers representing various ministries and departments, as well as members of the media.

Also present yesterday were MoHA Senior Special Duties Officer Hj Madli Hj Mohd Yussof and MoHA Acting Director of Administration and Finance Shamsul Bahrin Hj Mohd Hussain.

According to information provided by MoHA, this year’s regatta will see 825 participants from 34 teams taking part in the races.

His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah, the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam will be attending and taking part in the regatta, which is organised as part of His Majesty’s 70th birthday celebrations.
