CONSTRUCTION of the National Service Programme (PKBN) Centre in Kg Batu Apoi in Temburong is on schedule for completion by the end of this year, the minister of culture, youth and sports said.

Yang Berhormat Pehin Datu Lailaraja Major General (Rtd) Dato Paduka Seri Hj Awg Halbi Hj Mohd Yusof said that they were now waiting for the final phase of the PKBN Centre construction to be completed.

“As soon as it is done, the whole project is complete.

“The plan is of course for the next intake of PKBN trainees to begin using the centre in Temburong for training,” YB Pehin Dato Hj Awg Halbi said.

Earlier this year, the minister had said during the 12th Legislative Council (LegCo) session that the second phase of the PKBN centre’s construction should have begun in 2015, but was delayed following a review that took into account the available resources and the facilities to be built.

He also said at the time that construction of the centre is expected to be completed in November, in time for the sixth intake of PKBN to begin their training.

It was previously reported in March following the passing out parade for the fifth intake of PKBN that a total of 1,131 youth have completed PKBN to date.

In 2014, it was reported that PKBN would have a new $26.59 million building in Temburong that would be capable of housing 700 PKBN trainees.

At the time, it was expected to have been completed in June 2015.
