Birthday stamps well received

THE Bandar Seri Begawan Post Office have recorded $1,700 in sales of special commemorative postal products to mark the 70th birthday of His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah, the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam.

Assistant Superintendent of Post Hjh Rubiah Hj Masri said that they are expecting more sales in the coming days.

Among the best-selling items are the special commemorative stamps, official first day covers and the $70 special miniature sheet edition.

“Many came to buy the sheets of (special commemorative stamps) which features all five designs in seven copies,” she said, adding that a sheet of the special edition stamps cost $24.50.

She said that although the sales were very encouraging on the first day, sales usually pick up towards the end of the month.

An avid philatelist, Hj Mohd Rozan Dato Paduka Hj Mohd Yunos, told_ The Brunei Times _that he spent more than $250 buying commemorative products from the Postal Services Department during the launch on Friday.

“This is a very rare opportunity for us stamp enthusiasts, to be able to collect these unique stamps which are only issued once every five years by the department since His Majesty’s 50th birthday in 1996,” said the executive director for the Centre for Strategic and Policy Studies (CSPS).

“For me, these stamps are priceless because there aren’t many countries that still do this (issuing stamps),” he said, adding that his love for the nation’s history and cultural heritage motivated him to collect stamps.
