MUSLIMS were reminded to be grateful for His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah, the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam’s leadership in sustaining the country’s peace and prosperity.

The Friday sermon yesterday coincided with the monarch’s 70th birthday, with imams across the country speaking on the lineage of Brunei’s monarchs and the Islamic beliefs they held as part of the Malay Muslim Monarchy national philosophy.

“The philosophy has fostered a way of life of the people that is complete, perfect and superior, because Islam is the true religion and is pleased by Allah SWT,” said the imams.

The imams urged the country’s citizens to obey the instructions and advice given by the monarch in order to be successful in “both worlds”.

“Our country has always been protected, peaceful and prosperous under the rule, care and concern of the king who always gives priority to the welfare and harmony of the country,” said the imams.

They added: “The king has emphasised the teachings of Islam and the laws of Allah SWT to be implemented in the establishment of core administration, management and law of the country”.

Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) had also reminded Muslims in a hadith that they are to follow the instructions of their leaders so long as it is not contrary to the teachings of Islam.

As narrated by Imam al-Bukhari from Ibn’ radiyallahu ‘anhu;

“A Muslim must listen and obey, both in the things he likes and in the things he hates, except when he is ordered to perform immoral acts. When he is ordered to perform immoral acts, he is not obliged to hear and obey.”

The sermon further reminded congregants to show their gratitude to the Almighty and for Him to extend the monarch’s life so he may continue to govern and lead the country.
