THE Belait district museum is set to open on schedule this month, the director of museums has said.

Although he could not reveal the exact date, Pg Dr Karim Pg Hj Osman said the museum’s opening was “not delayed” and would be happening “soon in conjunction with His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam’s birthday celebration”.

In March, the Museums Department director had said that the department had gazetted the Belait District Officer’s former residence under the Antiquities and Treasure Trove Act 1967 as the site for the new museum.

Pg Dr Karim also mentioned then that the museum opening was scheduled for July.

He added that the museum would feature several galleries which will showcase local flora and fauna, archaeology and the history of the district, as well as a section about Brunei Shell Petroleum.

The museum will also host temporary exhibitions, he said.

Previously, the museums director had also said that the site of the Temburong museum will be the old Temburong District Office, but that the building would have to undergo several renovations and upgrading works before it could be opened.

He also mentioned then that potential locations for the Tutong museum were under discussion.

Earlier this year, the Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports Yang Berhormat Pehin Datu Lailaraja Major General (Rtd) Dato Paduka Seri Hj Awg Halbi Hj Mohd Yusof had said during the 12th Legislative Council session that there were plans to set up museums in each district, in a bid to promote cultural heritage within the nation.
