2 foreigners fined over untaxed alcohol

TWO foreign nationals were recently fined by the Magistrates’ Court for possessing undeclared alcohol.

The Customs and Excise Department conducted separate raids on two houses last month and found a total of 11 bottles of liquor and 57 cans of beer.

On June 14, customs preventive officers raided the home of 30-year-old Malaysian national Toh Mei Choo on Jalan Mulaut Limau Manis in Kampung Masin and discovered 28 cans of beer and six bottles of liquor.

During investigations, Toh Mei Choo admitted that the alcohol belonged to her and was for her personal consumption. She said she had purchased it from Limbang, Sarawak in Malaysia for $75 but didn’t pay the excise duty of $92.

She was ordered to pay a $1,500 fine or serve six weeks in prison.

Meanwhile, 38-year-old Philippine national Allan Casilla Bacani was found on June 25 to be in possession of five bottles of liquor and 29 cans of beer at his home on Jalan Mulaut Kilanas. He bought them also in Limbang, Sarawak

He was ordered to pay a fine of $600 or serve one month in prison.
