SENIOR citizens said they were grateful for the opportunity to personally greet His Majesty, Her Majesty and other members of the royal family during the open house at Istana Nurul Iman.

Speaking to The Brunei Times, 68-year-old Hj Damit Hj Kula said he has been going to the royal palace during Raya since he was a young boy.

“My parents brought me here when I was little, and it was always on the first day it was open to the public,” he said.

Hj Damit said he continued the tradition to show his love for the monarch and the country.

“It’s great that we all have the opportunity to see His Majesty and to be able to personally greet him Selamat Hari Raya, Alhamdulillah.”

He said he felt blessed to be able to see the nation grow under the rule of His Majesty.

“Our country has grown and developed so much from back then. I hope the younger generation will realise the sacrifices made by so many to make this country what it is today.

“I also hope the younger generation will continue to make the nation great, harmonious and peaceful, Amin Ya Rabbal Alamin,” he said.

Fifty-year-old Nurfaridah Hj Abdul Wahab said she looks forward to greeting Her Majesty Duli Raja Isteri Pengiran Anak Hajah Saleha every year.

“I have been going for four years straight with my colleagues, friends and family. Every year, I look forward to personally greeting Her Majesty and giving my best wishes.”

Nurfaridah said she plans to continue visiting the palace every year to show her love and support for His Majesty and Her Majesty.

“It’s also a time to see other people, network, make new friends as well as strengthen relations,” she said.

Hashimah Abu Bakar said she has been visiting the palace since she was 20.

“There have been so many changes since then, and I’ve met so many different people throughout the years. Alhamdulillah, at the age of 60, I’m still strong enough to come visit.”

She said she enjoys waiting in line just to greet and see members of the royal family.

“Despite the long wait, you can see the excitement of people from all walks of life including tourists who came to see His Majesty and other members of the royal family.”

Hashimah went with her husband and three children to the Istana open house on Thursday.

“I hope my children will continue this tradition and bring their children and grandchildren. We are indeed truly blessed to be given this opportunity, Alhamdulillah.”
