AN INDONESIAN man was sentenced to three months in jail and three strokes of the cane yesterday after he admitted to overstaying in Brunei.

On July 2, Kuswara reported himself to the Immigration Department’s Enforcement Section regarding the expiry of his immigration pass in Brunei.

It was found that the immigration pass endorsed in the passport had expired on February 12, 2015.

Kuswara last entered Brunei on February 2, 2015 and his entry was valid until February 11, 2015. No further extension was made thereafter.

Despite knowing that his immigration pass had expired, Kuswara chose to remain unlawfully in Brunei and worked as a freelancer in the country.

In his mitigation, the 47-year-old defendant told the court that he chose to illegally remain in Brunei because he could not afford to return home.
