THE Belait District Office’s Welfare Fund will donate essential supplies to 219 families for Hari Raya Aidil Fitri this year.

Village heads and penghulu from the district were handed over the 219 sets of supplies, which include rice, cooking oil, salt and sugar, by the Belait District Officer Hj Haris Othman last weekend for distribution.

The welfare fund has received $114,397 from private companies, non-governmental organisations and members of the public since being set up in 2012.

Hj Haris said the fund has allowed for 700 families to be assisted, and continues to be open to all those willing to come forward to donate.

“The funds also go to home repairs for the less fortunate, donations to victims of tragedies like fires and others who we’ve identified to be in troubling situations,” said Hj Haris.

In a statement issued yesterday, the Belait District Office said the Women’s Institute (WI) and Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD) donated $1,080 and $875, respectively, to the district office’s Welfare Fund and the Orphans Fund.

Acting Treasurer of UBD Khairul Anwar Hj Shahari and Manager of WI Hjh Halimah Abdul Latif were on hand to present the Raya donations for their respective organisations.

Those interested in donating to the district’s welfare and orphan funds can stop by their office along Jalan McKerron in Kuala Belait.
