YOUTHS from Universiti Brunei Darussalam’s (UBD) Guild of Graduates visited the homes of 22 orphans on July 1 to hand out donations of daily necessities and money.

Each orphan received a donation of $30 and daily necessities such as rice, cooking oil and washing powder. The donations were contributions collected from UBD alumni.

In a phone interview yesterday, Muhammad Nuriskandar Md Hasnan, president of the UBD Guild of Graduates, said the charity drive was a continuation of last year’s Ramadhan project to help the community, especially the less fortunate.

“It’s important for all of us to provide (assistance such as) daily necessities to the (needy), especially for the coming Hari Raya (celebration). But more importantly, it’s important to raise awareness among the public about the hardships and challenges these people face every single day without their loved ones,” said Nuriskandar.

He said that as part of his duty as president, he will ensure that the guild is committed to helping the community in the years to come.

“It’s part of our obligations as UBD graduates to give back to the community. Our hope is that these activities will not be limited only to the month of Ramadhan but extended throughout the year. We also hope that (by doing our part), we will be able to provide more opportunities and benefits to those in need.”
