THE Royal Brunei Police Force (RBPF) in Belait led a joint operation across three Mukims in the district yesterday to inspect if retail stores were adhering to the blanket ban on the sale of fireworks.

Stores in the heart of Seria and Kuala Belait towns, Sg Liang and Wisma Yakin in Kg Pandan were found to be upholding the ban when visited by the RBPF past 10am.

Officials from the Fire and Rescue Department, the Municipal Board, the Belait District Office and the Royal Customs and Excise Department were also present during inspections, which ended midday.

With Hari Raya festivities less than a week away, the RBPF reiterated that the complete ban on the sale and use of fireworks was still in place.

Under Chapter 58 of the Firearms and Explosives Act, selling, owning or importing firecrackers or fireworks is an offence punishable by a minimum sentence of five years in prison, three strokes of the cane and a fine of up to $3,000.

The RBPF mentioned in a statement that the blanket ban is in place in the interest of public safety.
