THIRTY-TWO orphans, 10 single mothers and five special needs individuals received donations of basic necessities such as rice and cooking oil yesterday at a Khatam Al-Quran ceremony held by Kg Sungai Besar Mosque.

The ceremony began with the recital of Al-Fatihah led by the guest of honour, Minister of Religious Affairs Yang Berhormat Pehin Udana Khatib Dato Paduka Seri Setia Ustaz Hj Awg Badaruddin Pengarah Dato Paduka Hj Awg Othman, who also distributed the donations.

It concluded with a mass Maghrib prayer after the breaking of the fast.

The Khatam Al-Quran was also held to commemorate His Majesty’s upcoming 70th birthday.

Imam Hj Aji Hj Abd Rahman told The Brunei Times on the sidelines of the event that this is the fourth year the mosque is holding its afternoon and evening Tadarus Al-Quran programme. He said the programme has seen several changes in its format but has retained its main objective of filling the time with religious activities during Ramadhan.

This year, 70 participants from the Kg Sungai Besar area are taking part in the programme, which began on June 8 and ends on July 3, he said, adding that 40 members of the Kg Sungai Besar Mosque Takmir Committee, 30 Muslimahs, five religious teachers and two imams are also taking part.

He said the programme starts after the mass Asar prayer where participants read Al-Quran followed by a tahlil and iftar together. The programme also aims to bring the community closer together through religious activities at the mosque.
