MUSLIMS should make sure they pay their Zakat Fitrah before the end of Ramadhan, as failing to do so is a sin.

Khairul Arifin Hj Yusop, an imam from Perpindahan Lambak Kanan Mosque, said Zakat Fitrah is required to be paid during Ramadhan, so he advised Muslims to pay early to ensure they don’t forget.

“There’s no doubt that there are people who delay paying zakat. Some of them want to pay before the imam begins the Raya prayers, while some are too caught up with Raya preparations,” he told The Brunei Times yesterday.

He said paying early is good as they won’t have to rush at the end of the month.

“If we pay our zakat in advance, we will be able to avoid long lines and give the zakat collectors space to prepare for the Raya prayers,” he said.

Khairul Arifin said paying zakat is important, as it is one of the pillars of Islam. He said it is compulsory, as it will help build a caring society where the donations will be given to those who are less fortunate.

He said zakat will also help strengthen relationships between the rich and the poor in the country, while at the same time, they will receive pahala (rewards) from Allah SWT.

He advised the public to pay their Zakat Fitrah to the appointed zakat collectors which comprise imams and village heads across the country.

Hj Muhd Azrol Alim Hj Zaini, the imam at Kg Pintu Malim Mosque, also stressed that Zakat Fitrah is a compulsory payment in Islam during Ramadhan.

“Zakat Fitrah is very important because it is one of the pillars of Islam. It cleans our soul and gives us pahala while at the same time provides assistance to others,” he said.

He encouraged Muslims to make sure they pay Zakat Fitrah, noting that some people often forget to pay because they could be distracted by other tasks.

“We are given one month to pay for Zakat Fitrah, so there are no excuses for us to not have the time to pay,” he said.

An appointed collector at a mosque who declined to be named also noted that people do forget to pay Zakat Fitrah and advised Muslims to pay early.

“Islam recommends you to pay in advance during the start of Ramadhan,” he said, adding that the zakat can be paid directly to the Brunei Islamic Religious Council (MUIB) or to the appointed collectors.
