Egyptian imam leads tarawih prayers at Perpindahan Lambak Kanan Mosque
BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN
SOME 300 Muslims performed tarawih prayers yesterday at Perpindahan Lambak Kanan Mosque led by an Egyptian imam.
It was the fourth stop for Syeikh Ahmed Mohammed Elhadi Mohamed Mansour, who is leading a series of tarawih prayers at different mosques in the country during Ramadhan.
He first led the prayers at Al-Ameerah Mosque in Jerudong followed by Mohamed Bolkiah Mosque in Serusop and Hassanal Bolkiah Mosque in Tutong.
Muhammad Asri Jaini, one of the congregants and a regular mosque-goer, said it was a ‘special experience’ having a foreigner who is not only well-versed in the Quran but also in Arabic lead the prayers.
“I love the way he recites the verses. It’s similar to when the imams from Madinah were invited to lead the prayers here (in Brunei) a couple of years ago.
“It’s soothing (to hear) because you know that Arabic is their mother tongue and you can feel that they understand the verses when they recite them, making the impact of the Quran ever more powerful on congregants,” he said.
Muhammad Asri said the experience was different to being led by local imams, as they will usually recite short surahs.
“It’s not that it’s a problem to read short surahs, but it’s just nice to hear variety in the verses being recited sourced from the longer surahs in Al-Quran,” he said.
A congregant who only wanted to be known as Hafiz said he enjoyed the prayers led by the imam as the verses read were well measured.
“As a congregant, you can hear that each verse was said with carefulness to make sure the meaning was retained in the pronunciation as wrong pronunciations would convey different meanings,” he said.
“It’s good that Brunei invites Muslims from other ethnic backgrounds. It just shows the oneness of Islam and the inclusiveness the religion has for people.”
The Egyptian imam will lead at Sultan Sharif Ali Mosque in Sengkurong tonight, Mohammad Jamalul Alam Mosque in Kuala Belait tomorrow and Lambak Berakas Mosque on June 26.
Syeikh Ahmed will also perform tarawih at Jubli Perak SHHB Mosque in Jangsak on June 27 followed by SSBR Pg Anak Damit Mosque in Manggis on June 28, Setia Ali Mosque in Muara on June 29, Pengiran Muda ‘Abdul Mateen Mosque in Mulaut on June 30 and Ash-Shaliheen Mosque on July 1.
