MEMBERS of the public have donated 429 pints of blood to the Ministry of Health (MoH) since it launched a blood donation drive on June 15 for the blessed month of Ramadhan.

Prior to the blood drive, the MoH collected 64 pints since the start of the month.

In a phone interview, Senior Scientific Officer from the Blood Donation Centre Teo Shyh Kheng urged more members of the public to donate as the total of 493 pints for June is still much lower than the average of 1,100 pints collected per month.

According to Teo, a single blood donation can save three lives and comes with certain health benefits, including helping the blood regenerate by stimulating the generation of new blood cells and reducing excess iron in the body, which helps reduce the risks of heart attack by one third.

To maintain a healthy supply of blood and increase blood donation, the Ministry of Health is extending the operating hours of the RIPAS Hospital’s Blood Donation Centre from 8.30pm to 10.30pm today and on June 28.

Also on June 28, a blood donation drive will be held at the Youth Centre in Temburong from 9.30am to 11.30am and on June 30, another drive will be held at Burger King Citi Square from 8pm to 10pm.

Members of the public with enqueries about blood donation can contact the Talian Darussalam hotline at 123, or the Blood Donation Centre at 2242424, ext 5745.
