THE Community Development Department (Japem) yesterday visited the homes of four underprivileged and special needs Bruneians to provide assistance in the form of a Hari Raya Hamper.

The delegation, which comprised of top level and senior officials from the Ministry of Culture Youth and Sports, visited houses from Kampung Kuala Lurah, Kampung Junjungan, Kampung RPN Lambak Kanan and Kampung Batu Marang .

Speaking to The Brunei Times, one of the recipients, an 83-year-old widow who suffers from impaired vision, said she was grateful for the assistance provided by the government as she currently lives alone while her children are residing in Tawau for work.

She added that her friends and relatives would visit during their free time but when she is alone she would request for help from her neighbour to take her shopping for daily necessities which she pays for using money from her old age pension and medical allowance.

The charity drive is part of an annual programme dubbed the “Kembara Amal Ramadhan” held to provide assistance to individuals with special needs, underpriviledged and the elderly.

It is done to alleviate their burdens and uplift their spirit in celebrating the upcoming Hari Raya festivity.

Leading the delegation was the Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports Yang Berhormat Pehin Datu Lailaraja Major General (Rtd) Dato Paduka Seri Hj Awg Halbi Hj Mohd Yusof. Also in attendance were the Permanent Secretaries of the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport (MCYS), Dato Paduka Dr Hj Affendy Pehin Orang Kaya Saiful Mulok Dato Seri Paduka Hj Abidin and Datin Paduka Dr Hjh Norlila Dato Paduka Hj Abdul Jalil.
