Ministry of Education, RBPF hold donation ceremonies

MORE than 150 recipients comprising orphans and fakir miskin (poor and destitute) in the Brunei-Muara district received assistance from the Ministry of Education (MoE) yesterday in the form of daily necessities for the upcoming Hari Raya Aidil Fitri.

Conducted through the “Projek Amal Kemasyarakatan Fastabiqul Khairat” programme, the donations were collected through the Department of Co-Curriculum Education as part of their initiative to alleviate the burden of those who are in need and to help ensure families have enough money to prepare for the upcoming Hari Raya celebration.

On hand to present the aids was Education Minister, YB Pehin Orang Kaya Indera Pahlawan Dato Seri Setia Hj Suyoi Hj Osman.

A total of 12 orphans under the Co-Curriculum Education Department and another 12 students selected from low income group families received donations including bags of rice, daily necessities such as cooking ingredients as well as clothing for Hari Raya.

In his welcoming remarks, Acting Director of Co-Curriculum Education Department Hj Azis Hj Nayan said this was the first time the ministry had organised the project, adding that he hoped through this donation drive, students and volunteers can help empower communities.

The donation project involved members and teachers from six uniformed groups in schools across the country such as the Girl Guides Association of Brunei Darussalam (PPPBD), Brunei Darussalam Red Crescent Society (BDRC) and Scouts. Hj Azis, who is also the organiser of the event said by participating in the project, students get to experience environmental education in informal settings.

According to the acting director, out of 155 recipients, 131 of them were of the underpriviliged families living in Kg Perpindahan Lambak Kanan who are registered under Brunei Islamic Religious Council (MUIB).

Following the donation presentation to the orphans, the Minister of Education handover the aids to the team leaders of each uniformed groups, who are in charge of distribution.

Also present at the ceremony yesterday were Education Deputy Minister Pg Dato Paduka Hj Bahrom Pg Hj Bahar, Dr Hjh Romaizah Hj Md Salleh, Permanent Secretary (Core Education) and other officials from MoE.

Meanwhile, the Royal Brunei Police Force (RBPF) also held a similar ceremony where 118 orphans received donations at the Hassanal Bolkiah Stadium at RBPF Headquarters in Gadong yesterday.

The donations are contributions from the welfare and sport body at RBPF and Welfare Body of Police Wives and Families (PEKERTI). The cash donations and gifts were given to the children of officers and staff under RBPF.

RBPF Commissioner Dato Seri Pahlawan Hj Mohd Jammy Hj Muhd Al Islam and spouse Datin Hjh Kamariah Hj Abd Hamid were present to handover the donations to the children.
