THE Council on Social Welfare or Majlis Kesejahteraan Masyarakat (MKM) has distributed at least 15,000 pieces of gently used baju kurung and baju cara melayu to underprivileged families this year, said MKM executive member Hj Yusof Halim.

The number did not include the shirts, pants and blouses that were also donated to the non-government organisation.

The clothings were donated in phases to underprivileged families who cannot afford to buy new clothes for the upcoming Hari Raya Aidil Fitri celebration in July.

MKM began collecting clothings in January and stop accepting on May 31.

The clothes ranged from formal to daily wears for children and adults.

“We believed that the charity benefitted more than 500 families In Temburong, Tutong, Brunei-Muara and Belait districts,” he said.

MKM distributed 500 boxes of clothing to the needy from Tutong and Belait districts on May 15.

They distributed 100 boxes of clothing to 50 families in Temburong in March.

“The response was overwhelming. We will repeat this programme annually before Ramadhan,” Hj Yusof said.

The NGO assists in addressing social issues of five core groups namely the children, people with disabilities, the elderly, poor/needy and vulnerable families.

Last year, the NGO distributed donated clothings to at least 200 individuals from 60 families during Ramadhan and Hari Raya.

MKM will also continue their food distribution programme for the needy this Ramadhan.

This year, MKM is providing meals to 365 people from 62 needy families for 10 days.

The meals are part of MKM’s effort to provide underprivileged families with wholesome meals during the fasting month.

MKM began their operation at their new office in Serusop following its official launching last month.

Hj Yusof said that with the new office, MKM will be able to conduct empowerment programmes and life skills classes for less fortunate individuals.

The programmes and classes are aimed at changing the mindset of members of underprivileged families under the care of MKM.
