LOCAL non-governmental organisation Pertiwi is hoping to exceed the amount raised from last year’s charity sale of $50,000 when they open at the Seria District Office building this Sunday.

Pertiwi’s chairperson for Belait, Fatimah Tanji, said their fair, held annually since the association’s inception 31 years ago, would run daily from 10am to 10pm until the day before Hari Raya Aidilfitri selling mostly pastries and food.

This year will see 38 vendors participate, six more than last year. Fatimah said the association would build on the feedback gained from last year’s sale, which saw over 100 types of biscuits, cakes, sweets, clothes and flowers sold.

“There’s more competition around these days. But for us, we’ve also grown to match them. To adapt, we offer the same traditional cakes but refine them by using contemporary ingredients. And the approach seems to have paid off, as last year saw our highest sales to date,” she said.

Fatimah said the organisation is maintaining the Seria District Office Building as their sales location to offer their customers continuity.

“We've purposely held our sale at the same location during the month of Ramadhan every year, so it’s become a tradition which the community knows about,” she said.
