A DONATION of $4,988 was presented by 11 private companies and associations to the Belait District Office yesterday for its orphan and charity funds.

The money is part of the ongoing assistance being provided mostly to the district’s orphans to alleviate their burden during the fasting month.

The associations included the Chinese Chamber of Commerce, the Hainan Association and the Zhong Zhin Hakka Union Association.

The private companies taking part included Sullivans (B) Sdn Bhd, Chin Kong Yin General Contractor and C.Y.F. Welding and Building Construction.

Receiving the donation at the District Office in Kuala Belait was Belait District Officer Hj Haris Othman.

Twenty-three orphan children from Kg Sungai Liang also received a donation totaling $690 on the sidelines of a Tadarus event held at Kg Sungai Liang Mosque yesterday.

Presenting the donation was the Deputy Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Home Affairs, Hj Idris Hj Md Ali.

A wakaf (endowment) in the form of a vacuum cleaner was also handed over to a representative of the mosque at the end of the event.

Besides alleviating the burden of those in need especially during Ramadhan, the numerous Tadarus and tahlil ceremonies being held in Belait can also be considered an avenue to foster closer relations between grassroots leaders and their people, the Belait District Office said in a press release.

A similar event was recently held in a rural area of Belait with Permanent Secretary of Religious Affairs Dato Seri Setia Hj Abd Aziz Orang Kaya Maharaja Lela Hj Md Yusof and his entourage reciting the Quran at the prayer hall in Kg Melilas.

In addition to enlivening the area, the activity was also aimed at sharing the benefits of Ramadhan with the new converts of Kg Melilas so they may be more appreciative of the blessed fasting month.
