MORE THAN 20 volunteers from two Chinese associations were assisting the Ministry of Health during a blood donation event yesterday at the Raja Isteri Pengiran Anak Saleha (RIPAS) Hospital’s Blood Donation Centre.

When The Brunei Times arrived at the centre, volunteers from the BLIA Sdn Bhd and Taiwan Business Association in Brunei Darussalam were seen handing out registration forms, registering names and directing human traffic.

As of press time at 8.50pm yesterday, more than 90 people had visited the centre to donate their blood.

“We come to donate blood every three months including the month of Ramadhan for more than 10 years now. Today some of us are donating blood but most are lending a hand to the centre,” said President of BLIA Foo Jong Wah.

She added that the month of Ramadhan was a great time for the association to support the public through blood donation as the centre sees a drop in the number of donors due to the fasting month.

To maintain blood supplies during Ramadhan, the MoH announced the extension of operating hours for blood donation centres on select days, giving Muslims the opportunity to donate blood after they have broken their fast.

A blood donation drive will be held at RIPAS Hospital’s Blood Donation Centre tomorrow from 8.30pm to 10.30pm. The centre will also be open to donors on June 21, June 22 and June 28 from 8.30pm to 10.30pm.

The ministry is also organising blood donation drives in other districts.

On July 2, a drive will be held at Pengiran Muda Mahkota Pengiran Muda Haji Al-Muhtadee Billah Hospital in Tutong from 8.30pm to 10.30pm. On July 14, a drive will be held at KB Central shopping mall from 10am to 2pm and on July 28, a drive will be held at the Youth Centre in Temburong from 9.30am to 11.30am.
