UNIVERSITI Brunei Darussalam has maintained its position in ranking band of the 2016 Asian Quacquarelli Symands (QS) University Rankings by being named the top university for student mobility for the second year in a row.

According to a press statement sent by UBD, the university was named the first in Asia for outbound student mobility for the second time even though the university dropped in the 2016 Asian QS University rankings.

This year, the country’s oldest and largest university came in as the 123rd best university in Asia, a drop from its 118th position last year.

Nevertheless, despite the drop, UBD still managed to be in the top 20 of five categories of the 2016 Asian QS University Rankings, including the outbound student mobility category.

UBD managed to score third for inbound student exchange, 11th for international faculty, 13th for faculty student ratio and 17th for international students.

The statement read that these positions marked an improvement in comparison to last year’s rankings where UBD was in the top 25 in the same categories.

“This year the QS has introduced several methodological changes to the way rankings are calculated which included taking a five year averaging of several categories to establish the final scores,” the statement read.

These changes, the statement added, impacted UBD as it only has scores in the last three years as it only entered the rankings three years ago.

Vice Chancellor of UBD, Datin Dr Hjh Anita Binurul Zahrina Pehin Orang Kaya Laila Wijaya Dato Seri Setia Hj Abd Aziz said that the five categories where the university ranked top 20 was associated with the institution’s core values.

“(Ranking top 20 in the categories) reaffirmed UBD’s commitment to an ethos of life-long learning,” she said.

“We remain committed to research and teaching excellence, and to provide an environment in which future-ready and industry-relevant graduates c an thrive,” the vice chancellor added. – Wail Wardi Wasil
