AN ASSISTANT superintendent at the Fire and Rescue Department was convicted yesterday on charges of accepting goods from a contractor while in the line of duty five years ago.

Co-accused, Managing Director of Syarikat Pro-Team Construction and Trading Sdn Bhd Yap Tiew Hon, was also convicted yesterday for abetment in obtaining the goods for Assistant Superintendent Wadi Hj Mohd Tuah.

In delivering her guilty verdict on both men yesterday, Senior Magistrate Pg Masni Pg Hj Bahar found no reason to believe that Wadi was going to pay the company for the goods and that there were no proper documentation of the transaction.

According to court document, Wadi obtained 550 tiles and two tonnes of cement amounting to $950 from Yap on November 19, 2011, with the knowledge that Yap’s company, at the time, was developing a housing project which Wadi was responsible for inspecting and approving.

Yap was also charged with assisting or encouraging Wadi with obtaining the tiles and cement.

Both defendants, who were indicted on April 2013, are facing a jail term of up to seven years and a fine.

The court yesterday extended the defendants’ bail pending the prosecution’s submission on sentencing on June 18.
