$25k in zakat fund distributed

A TOTAL of $25,400 from the payment of zakat (tithe) was distributed to fakir miskin (poor and destitute) families during a tadarus ceremony held at Kampung Salambigar mosque yesterday.

Present to hand over the donations was Deputy Minister of Religious Affairs Dato Paduka Hj Abdul Mokti Hj Mohd Daud.

The deputy minister distributed the zakat fund to 30 families from Brunei-Muara district who are registered under the Brunei Islamic Religious Council (MUIB).

The heads of family were given $500 each while their dependants received $400 each.

In an interview with The Brunei Times, 54-year-old widow Sri Banun Hj Jaidi expressed her gratitude to His Majesty’s government and thanked MUIB for the financial assistance given to her family.

Sri Banun, who works as a janitor at a government agency, said the financial contribution would be able to help her family make last minute preparations for the upcoming Hari Raya Aidil Fitri celebrations.

Alhamdulillah, I am grateful. With this money it can help to alleviate the burden of our daily expenses and for the Hari Raya preparations,” said the mother of four.

Another recipient, Adi Jumat who is currently unemployed, also said she was grateful for His Majesty’s government’s kind assistance.

“This (zakat donations) is what my family and I rely on every year,” said the 55-year-old divorcee.

She added: “With this money I can buy few things for Hari Raya and for my children’s school necessities.”

According to a statement from the Ministry of Religious Affairs, the donations are aimed to help lessen the financial burden of the underprivileged.

The tadarus ceremony was held for the ministry’s male officers and staff members as part of their religious activities to mark the noble month of Ramadhan.

The ceremony started with mass recitation of _Surah Al-Fatihah _led by the guest of honour, Dato Paduka Hj Abdul Mokti.

Following this, a tahlil and Doa Arwah recital was held.

The event is held annually by MoRA to further enliven the noble month of Ramadhan.
