Recruitment of village leaders

ALL district offices are doing their best in recruiting and appointing community leaders in places where the posts for villages heads and penghulus have been vacant since last year, said the home affairs minister.

Yang Berhormat Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Kerna Dato Seri Setia (Dr) Hj Awg Abu Bakar Hj Apong was speaking on the sidelines of a Firefighters Run recently held at the headquarters of Fire and Rescue Department in Berakas.

The minister said “a very good scheme of service” for these community leaders is already in place and provided by the government.

“But of course the scheme comes along with the qualifications.

“So in that sense, perhaps it requires candidates to have good education under the scheme of service,” said the minister.

Government news publication Pelita Brunei in end of April advertised 10 vacancies and six posts for heads of village and penghulus in Brunei-Muara.

Among the positions advertised, some were already vacant since last year such as village head posts for Kg Kianggeh, Kg Beribi, Kg Tanjung Bunut and RPN Kg Rimba for Zon 3 and 5.

The minister added that the crux of the problem in filling these community leaders’ posts maybe lies in the public’s perception of responsibilities that came with these positions.

“I think they (candidates) should be more positive, don’t think of this as a problem and what is important is for them to serve the community and the government.”

He went on to say that the recruitment of these leaders is an ongoing process and he hopes the public will do their due diligence and come forward to join the election when required.
