REGISTRATIONS for the fourth intake of the International Association of Bookkeepers (IAB) Diploma in Accounting and Advanced Booking course are open until July 1.

Hajah Salma Haji Abdul Latiff, the Chief Executive Officer of Crescent Sdn Bhd which is the only provider of the IAB Diploma course in Brunei, yesterday told The Brunei Times that response from Bruneians has been “very good” since they started offering the course in January 2015.

Besides being accredited by the United Kingdom, the IAB Diploma course is also recognised by the Ministry of Education (MoE), she said.

Hjh Salma said that completion of the year-long IAB Diploma course qualifies one to work as a bookkeeper, account clerk or account assistant.

“There are many qualified accountants (in Brunei) but not many bookkeepers, who are very important to an organisation such as a SME, which does not need an accountant but a bookkeeper,” she said.

“In the past, we have been depending upon foreigners to do bookkeeping for firms and we want our own Bruneians to fill up these job positions now.”

The people who were interested in the IAB Diploma course were often students who had gone through O and A-level examinations who were looking for alternatives, she said.

“They find the IAB course something they can work on, because there’s no requirements needed.”

The course was also popular among young entrepreneurs with startup businesses who wanted to know more about accounting and bookkeeping, as well as working business professionals, she said.

“We’ve also got students from government agencies which provide scholarships to the students to attend our course.”

Prospective students can opt to complete the course entirely online, which is a viable option for those who are either already working or students who prefer to work from home such as those residing in Belait, she added.

“For these online students, they will have to meet a supervisor once a month to do a progress check and to clear up any inquiries.”
