Brunei Women’s Council set to attend ASEAN civil society conference in August

MEMBERS of Women’s Council of Brunei Darussalam (MWNBD) and its affiliations will be attending the upcoming ASEAN Civil Society Conference/ ASEAN People’s Forum (ACSC/APF) at Timor Leste this August.

During the _tadarus _opening ceremony held yesterday, Pg Datin Paduka Hjh Mariam Pg Hj Matarsat, MWNBD vice president I, spoke on the sidelines on some of the events that the association will be taking part in.

She said that their aim for the conference is to delve into current issues relating to ASEAN countries and seeks to make improvements through their participation while also cooperate and assist ASEAN member countries in tackling important issues.

The ACSC/ APF conference is an open forum for debating ideas, formulating proposals and exchanging experiences and perspectives on human rights and other issues between civil society and ASEAN organisations.

During the conference, which is held in parallel to the official ASEAN Summit between August 2 and August 5, hundreds of civil society activists from the ASEAN region gather to represent the voice of civil society.

This year the theme of the conference is “Expanding People’s Solidarity for a Just and Inclusive ASEAN Community”.

The tadarus yesterday is an annual Ramadhan activity which is being organised this year by the Women’s Unit of Brunei Malay Teachers Association (PGGMB) as part of vivifying the holy month with religious activities.

It was also organised for MWNBD member to become more familiar with the Quran and strengthen relations among members.

A total of 100 members from 13 associations led by women attended the opening ceremony yesterday along with Women Biro Kg Manggis Village Consultative Council and Muslimah from the Suri Seri Begawan Raja Pengiran Anak Damit mosque.
