THE Council on Social Welfare (MKM) is filming a documentary to raise awareness on the state of Kg Menunggol, located on Berambang Island, and its inhabitants.

“We hope to turn our project into a kind of documentary for those on the mainland. I call it the mainland, as this is a (separate) island,” MKM Vice President II Pehin Orang Kaya Laila Perkasa Colonel (Rtd) Dato Paduka Hj Basir said on the sidelines of a donation drive yesterday.

It is inaccessible by land, and those who wish to visit would have to go by boat from the capital.

He is hoping to have it aired on national TV during Ramadhan but said he was unsure whether Radio Televisyen Brunei would be able to complete both production and post-production by then.

“We’re of the impression that Kg Menunggol is somewhat forgotten. There are a lot of abandoned cars, and the houses are still traditional, in a ‘kampung’ style.”

He said the documentary would act as an eye-opener to the relevant agencies on the living standards there.

“There’s something that should be done to harmonise the standards of living and their welfare here.

“I think there’s quite a number of things agencies can do to help develop the village here; for example, the landing site for boats and ferries. It’s their only means of transportation outside the village,” he said, adding that it could be a tourist attraction or leisure area for families.
