THE Royal Brunei Armed Forces (RBAF) commander yesterday paid tribute to youth who serve in the military, saying that they have made major contributions towards RBAF’s development.

Pehin Dato Pekerma Jaya Major General Dato Paduka Seri Mohd Tawih Abdullah said youth have become the main source of manpower in the military.

“If we are looking at youth as individuals between the ages of 18 to 39, then individuals within this age range make up the majority of soldiers who are serving under the RBAF,” he told reporters on the sidelines of RBAF’s 55th anniversary celebration.

“If we look at 55 years ago when the RBAF was first established, the strength of our army was only about 60 individuals (and) now it has grown to over 150 times from the initial numbers,” he added.

This year’s RBAF anniversary theme is ‘Visionary RBAF Generation’.

Pehin Major General Dato Mohd Tawih said youth are the source of the country’s strength.

“We are very thankful that the government has put a lot of effort in shaping the nation’s youths,” he said.

He said youth nowadays are easier to train, including National Service Programme (PKBN) trainees, adding that the RBAF now only needs to enhance the knowledge that the youth already have.

“The trend nowadays is that we (RBAF) are getting better recruits and not only in terms of academics but we also get recruits who are forward-thinking as well as physically healthy,” said Pehin Major General Dato Mohd Tawih.

“This is how I see the youths of our country contribute to the RBAF,” he added.
