THE chief Syar’ie judge urged members of the public and officials who will be involved in this year’s moon sighting not to spread false information about the new Ramadhan and Syawal moon.

Pehin Orang Kaya Paduka Seri Utama Dato Paduka Seri Setia Ustaz Hj Awang Salim Hj Besar warned government officials to ensure no false information on results of the new moon will be circulated during the moon sighting day on June 5 and July 5.

During a briefing on the Ramadhan moon sighting at the Syariah Court, he said officials must inform the Syariah Court judges on what they saw instead of discussing about it with other officials or attendees.

“Every year, the results of the sighting of the new moon were spread earlier through social media and WhatsApp even though the results were not yet confirmed by the authority,” he said, adding that this matter should not have happened.

He said anyone who is responsible for the moon sighting must be confident with what they saw as this will have an impact on the society.

“If he is confident that the new moon is sighted, then he should inform directly to the judges.

“For the past few years, every time the moon sighting committee members were asked, they were hesitant to give an answer. But the result had already been circulating among those who were present at the moon sighting locations through social media. This usually causes confusion to members of the public,” he continued.

The chief Syar’ie judge said people need to be cautious when spreading messages as anything that has not yet been confirmed must not be circulated in any social media platforms.

This year, the sighting of the new moon for Ramadhan 1437 Hijrah will be held on June 5 at 5.30pm, corresponding to 29th of Syaaban.

The sighting will be held at the DST Tower on Tungku Link Highway and Bukit Agok in the Brunei-Muara District, Bukit Ambok in Tutong, and Bukit Lumut in Belait.
