THE Ministry of Health (MoH) yesterday organised a public forum discussing management of diabetes during fasting in Ramadhan.
The forum, held at the Health Promotion Centre in Berakas, was part of the line up of activities organised in conjunction with this year’s World Health Day, focuses on diabetes and raising awareness about diabetic complications and management.
Members of the panel, comprising nurses and nutritionists involved in the treatment of diabetes, spoke on treating the illness, controlling food intake during Ramadhan as well as guidelines on performing physical activities while fasting during the discussions.
In a statement, the ministry said that diabetes, although treatable and preventable by living a healthy lifestyle, is on the rise around the world and raising awareness on the issue is of paramount importance to the interests of public health.
It added that the approach will help reduce the rate of deaths caused by non-communicable diseases, in line with the initiatives of the third global Sustainable Development Goals.
According to the MoH statement, diabetes was the cause of 1.5 million deaths in 2012 and according to statistics from the World Health Organization, it will be the seventh biggest cause of death in the world by 2030.
