THE Institute of Brunei Technical Education (IBTE) Business Campus is equipping its students with the right skills to venture into business and entrepreneurship as part of its efforts to support the government in diversifying the economy away from the oil and gas sector.

Dr Sheikh Lukman Sheikh Abdul Hamid, principal of IBTE Central, made the comments during the launch of the IBTE ‘Bedagang’ event themed ‘Developing Youth Entrepreneurs’.

He said the school has been actively involving students in entrepreneurial activities as the best way to learn in its business-related modules.

In these modules, he said, students are required to work in teams to organise an event where they will be assessed objectively throughout the entire process.

He said with this new approach to Competency Based Assessment, the school believes it will have a positive impact on teaching and learning. By planning lessons beyond traditional classroom settings, a whole new level of understanding and relevant learning will be embarked on by many of IBTE’s students.

The two-day event, which ends today, was organised by Year 1 HNTec students of the IBTE Business Campus and is being held at the Yayasan Sultan Hj Hassanal Bolkiah Complex in the capital.

According to a press statement, the objectives of the event are to provide students with an authentic learning approach through the entrepreneurship module as well as provide an avenue to assess students based on their practical work and also to create awareness and generate students’ interest in becoming self-employed.

There are a variety of activities at the event, including a total of 60 booths selling food and non-food items. Additionally, 35 booths are reserved for students and former IBTE Business Campus students and 25 booths are open to the public.

As part of its Community Social Responsibility, 3 per cent of the proceeds from sales at the IBTE Bedagang event will be donated to Dana Pg Muda Mahkota Al-Muhtadee Billah.

The guest of honour at yesterday’s event was Dr Chin Wei Keh, IBTE’s chief executive officer and director of technical education.
