CONFEX Training Services will be hosting Brunei’s first Health, Safety, Security and Environment (HSSE) Construction Conference later this year.

Themed ‘The Road to Goal Zero: The Future of Brunei’s HSE Governance and Performance’, it will be held on August 23 and 24 at the Brunei Art and Handicrafts Centre’s Tarindak D’Seni on Jalan Residency in the capital, according to a statement from Confex.

The conference will bring together internationally and locally renowned HSSE professional speakers to deliberate, discuss and share information on topics such as achieving zero injuries, fatalities and serious incidents, applying best practices of international HSSE governance and Brunei’s latest developments in HSSE, the statement said.

Renowned US motivational safety speaker Lee Shelby will present the first keynote at the conference.

The statement said Shelby suffered an occupational injury that nearly cost his life when he came into contact with an energised overhead conductor which carried approximately 12,000 volts.

As a result, he had to have both of his arms amputated below the elbow and spent 23 days in an intensive care burn unit.

Other speakers include Dr Keith Thomas, a retired army lieutenant colonel who went into academia, specialising in teaching leadership and management related subjects including the development of high performance teams and organisational development and change. His talk will be on “Leadership in HSSE -Where Should It Start?”

The two-day conference will also feature presentations from three government agencies as a cooperative move between the government and corporate sectors in working towards a common aim of promoting the safety culture.

HSSE specialists, engineers, operations managers, compliance officers, business development managers, HR executives and corporate communications, public relations and other professionals who are concerned with health, safety or the environment are encouraged to attend the conference.
