SEVENTY-FOUR officers of the Royal Brunei Armed Forces (RBAF) were promoted yesterday in a ceremony at the Officers’ Mess at Berakas Garrison.

They included two senior officers: Colonel (U) Shahril Anwar Hj Ma’awiah, Commander of the Royal Brunei Air Force (RBAirF), who was promoted to the rank of brigadier general, and Lt Col (U) Hj Md Muluddin Hj Latif, the Director of Force Capability Development, who was promoted to colonel.

Meanwhile, 14 officers were promoted to substantive major/lieutenant commander, 12 were promoted to acting major/lieutenant commander, 18 were promoted to substantive captain/lieutenant, 27 were promoted to acting captain/lieutenant and one was promoted to lieutenant.

The Ministry of Defence (MinDef) said in a press statement that the promotions are part of an ongoing effort to recognise, reward and groom officers who have performed well and demonstrated potential to contribute further to the RBAF.

The officers were given the promotions in rank after meeting certain criteria set by the RBAF Career Development Structure.

According to a representative of the RBAF, the senior officers that have been promoted were selected based on achieving a set criteria, who have shown good discipline and a high level of performance that is up to the standards expected of them.

They would have to be physically fit and have completed military courses that are tailored for the particular ranks, and only after the criteria has been met would their names be recommended to the Defence Executive Committee for promotional consideration.

The representative said these promotions are given by the consent of His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam, the Minister of Defence and the Supreme Commander of the RBAF.

In an interview with The Brunei Times, Colonel (U) Shahril Anwar said he was happy and excited about his promotion, as with all officers who are promoted.

“I feel very grateful, and syukur Alhamdulillah to Allah SWT for giving me (this opportunity) and also to His Majesty and the RBAF for giving me this promotion.

“I will continue to work as I always do – push hard and work hard. Where it leads to is not up to me to decide. It’s all from (the top). But even so, I will still continue to work hard,” he said.

The officers were presented with their new insignias by Royal Brunei Armed Forces Commander Pehin Datu Pekerma Jaya Major General Dato Paduka Seri Mohd Tawih bin Abdullah.

Also present at the ceremony was the Deputy Minister of Defence, First Admiral (Rtd) Dato Seri Pahlawan Abdul Aziz Hj Md Tamit, members of the Defence Executive Committee, services commanders, commandants, directors, senior officers and officers of MinDef and the RBAF as well as family members of the promoted senior officers.
