ART enthusiasts will have the chance to win $5,000 in an art contest organised in conjunction with His Majesty’s 70th birthday celebrations.

In a press statement, the organising committee for the Brunei Art Competition said this year’s competition, with the theme ‘Visionary Generation’, is divided into three categories.

Category ‘A’ is accepting entries depicting activities of His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah, the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam, with youths while category ‘B’ is for artwork explaining ‘Development and Youths’ Progress’ and category ‘C’ requires participants to focus on the concept of ‘My Vision for My Country’.

Category A is open to all citizens and permanent residents. Category B is also open to those stipulated in Category A but includes Green IC holders who have resided in Brunei for over a year. Category C is open to participation by students at Upper Secondary Schools up to Sixth Form.

The Brunei Art Competition co-chairman, Dato Paduka Hj Idris Hj Abas, said the grand prize for the first category is $5,000 while second and third place winners will receive $1,000 and $500 respectively.

The winner of the second category will bring home $1,000 while those finishing second and third will receive $700 and $200 respectively. Consolation prizes of $200 will be awarded to participants for category A and B.

For the last category, the winner will receive $500, while those coming in second and third will receive $200 and $100 respectively, while consolation prizes of $50 will be awarded to three other participants.

The aim of the competition is to enliven the birthday celebrations of His Majesty, which will take place on July 15.

It is also to support and appreciate young talent, especially amongst youths and students, as well as local artists to produce high-quality artwork for the country.

Applications for this year’s competition began being accepted yesterday, and submission of entry forms will close at 2pm on July 2. The forms can be obtained from the Royal Wharf Art Gallery in Bandar Seri Begawan.
