BRUNEI will celebrate His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah, the Sul-tan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam’s 70th birthday on July 15, the government announced yesterday.

For the past three years, Brunei held a belated birthday celebration for the Sultan as July 15 fell on the fasting month of Ramadhan.

During a meeting yesterday, His Royal Highness Prince Hj Al-Muhtadee Billah, the Crown Prince and Senior Minister at the Prime Minister’s Office, urged organisers of His Majesty’s 70th birthday celebrations to be more creative and make use of the available resources in organising events.

In his sabda, HRH said the national committee for the monarch’s 70th birthday celebrations should be proactive in ensuring that this year’s festivities are better.

This includes celebrations at the district level, the Crown Prince said during the third meeting of the National Committee for His Majesty’s 70th birthday celebrations. “We should optimise resources while maintaining the uniqueness of the celebrations at the same time,” HRH added.

The Crown Prince said most importantly, the celebrations must further strengthen the bond between His Majesty and the people of Brunei.

He went on to say that organisers need to take heed of His Majesty’s titah during a previous meeting with the Executive Committee of His Majesty’s 70th birthday celebrations.

In the titah, His Majesty had said all forms of celebrations must be analysed and not left to personal whims or desires.

The monarch added that there is no need to be extravagant in spending for the celebrations as this might lead to wastage, which is forbidden in Islam.

HRH said the monarch’s titah clearly states that organisers can no longer maintain a ‘business as usual’ attitude, and instead to be more creative in ensuring the smooth running of the celebrations.

During the meeting, the committee was briefed on the preparations for the main events of His Majesty’s 70th birthday celebrations such as the hoisting of the giant national flag and performances for His Majesty’s get together with rakyat in all four districts.

Thanksgiving prayers will be held in all mosques, surau and prayer halls across the country, with the focal point at Jame’ ‘Asr Hassanil Bolkiah on July 14.

His Majesty’s birthday parade will be held at Taman Haji Sir Muda Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien on July 15, while the investiture ceremony will be held on the same day at Istana Nurul Iman.

His Majesty will meet Tutong residents at the Community Hall Complex Field on July 19 before making his way to the Bangar Community Hall on July 21.

Belait residents will greet His Majesty at the Kuala Belait Municipal Field on July 23, while Brunei-Muara is the last stop at Taman SOAS on July 24.

The 70 times Khatam Al-Quran for members of mukim and village consultative councils throughout the country will be held at Istana Nurul Iman on July 28.

Also present at the meeting was Chief of Adat Istiadat Yang Amat Mulia Pengiran Lela Cheteria Sahibun Najabah Pengiran Anak Hj Abdul Aziz Pengiran Jaya Negara Pengiran Hj Abu Bakar, adviser to the National Committee for His Majesty’s 70th birthday celebrations.
