Brunei endorses plans for betterment of labour environment

THE Minister of Home Affairs Yang Berhormat Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Kerna Dato Seri Setia (Dr) Hj Awg Abu Bakar Hj Apong has endorsed several cooperative work plans aimed at enhancing future activities to strengthen labour technical cooperation between ASEAN member countries.

During the ASEAN Labour Ministers’ Meeting and the 9th ASEAN Labour Ministers’ Plus Three Meeting in Vientiane, Laos recently, the minister also agreed on the ‘Vientiane Declaration on Transition from Informal Employment to Formal Employment towards Decent Work Promotion in ASEAN’.

YB Pehin Dato Hj Awg Abu Bakar shared in the meeting that the number of people in informal employment in the sultanate is estimated at 18,000 people.

He said the formalisation of those working in informal jobs is encouraged through the extending of social safety nets, business start-up initiatives, improvement of government services and strengthening of public-private partnership.

The declaration is expected to be submitted to the 28th ASEAN Summit in Laos in September 2016.

According to a statement by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MoHA), other approved plans include the ASEAN Committee on the Implementation of the ASEAN Declaration on the Protection and Promotion of the Rights of Migrant Workers (ACMW) and the Senior Labour Officials Meeting Working Group on Progressive Labour Practices to Enhance the Competitiveness of ASEAN (SLOM-WG).

The endorsed plans will be carried out between 2016 and 2020.
