A LOCAL woman was ordered to serve six months in prison for failing to pay a $3,000 fine for drug consumption.

The Magistrates’ Court fined 29-year-old Nurul Iffah Alya Nurana @ Nabilah Salim on February 18, 2016 after she pleaded guilty to consuming methylamphetamine on two separate occasions in January 2013 and April 2015.

The mother of four had been given a three-month grace period to pay the fine but failed to do so.

She told the court that her father would have paid the fine but misunderstood the length of the grace period which led to him missing the payment deadline, an argument that was dismissed as the court is unable to extend the grace period.

During yesterday’s proceedings before Magistrate Hjh Ervy Suftriana Hj Abd Rahman, the prosecution submitted a doctor’s recommendation that the defendant should undergo rehabilitation for her drug use.

The defendant was subsequently ordered to serve her six-month prison sentence with immediate effect in default of the fine and to undergo three years of rehabilitation at Pusat Al-Islah in Tutong upon her release.

She is also facing charges of extortion and assault in a separate ongoing case at the High Court involving multiple defendants who outraged the modesty of a man, wrongfully confined him and assaulted him at a house in Kg Perpindahan Lambak Kanan in November last year.
