THE keys to the new surau or prayer hall at the Rimba Air Force Base were officially handed over in a ceremony at the site yesterday morning.

The recently-completed prayer hall, designed with a modern Islamic architecture concept, covers an area of approximately 778 square metres and can accommodate up to 600 worshippers while the car park area fits 34 cars.

In addition to the main prayer hall, the building has offices for the imam and the bilal, ablution areas for both male and female worshippers, a female prayer area and a jenazah room.

Deputy Permanent Secretary (Defence Policy and Development) Abu Sufian Hj Ali, who was the guest of honour, officiated the ceremony yesterday by presenting a mock key to Deputy Commander of the Royal Brunei Air Force (RBAirF) Colonel (U) Hj Hamsani Hj Abd Hamid.

The ceremony commenced with the recitation of Surah Al Fatihah, followed by the key handover ceremony and concluded with a doa selamat.

Also present during the ceremony were Director of Development and Work Services Hjh Marliyana Hj Abdullah Fung, as well as officers and staff of the Directorate and RBAirF.

The construction of the prayer hall was a project by the Directorate of Development and Work Services (DDWS) to ensure that personnel of the Rimba Air Force Base are able to worship and pray in congregation.

The prayer hall is also open for public use through proper security procedure.

The main contractor for the project was Noracon Sdn Bhd while the development project section of the DDWS carried out the role of architect, quantity surveyor, mechanical and electrical engineering.
