Bail in case of weapon possession

A MAN who was charged last week with possession of an offensive weapon while in a public place was released on bail yesterday while police continue with their investigation.
The defendant Shamsul Bahri Abdullah was released on a $5,000 court bail or the same amount in two local sureties pending the next mention of the case on June 2.
As part of the bail conditions, the 43-year-old was also ordered to observe a curfew from 7am to 7pm; to report to the Bandar Seri Begawan Police Station on a weekly basis; not to contact directly or indirectly the prosecution witnesses and; not to commit or be involved any other offences while out on bail.
During the proceedings before the chief magistrate Muhammed Faisal PDJLD DSP HJ Kefli, Deputy Public Prosecutor Mohammad Danial DSP Hj Kifrawi said that they were not ready to take Shamsul’s plea as police were still investigating into the possibility of another offence which may involve the defendant.
The court document stated that on May 12, at about 6.45am, Shamsul was in the vicinity of Jalan McArthur in the capital and he had in his possession an offensive weapon, a sharp metal object shaped like a katana.
The penalty carries an imprisonment term of up to 10 years and not less than three strokes of the cane.
