UNIVERSITI Teknologi Brunei (UTB)’s sixth Student Leadership and Development programme was launched yesterday at the university’s lecture theatre.

Chairperson of the programme, Hamiz ‘Abdulhadi Haji Osman said this year’s programme would carry the theme “Dare to Care” which would emphasise on the importance of awareness for the needy and underprivileged.

In addition, the programme is organised to train the participants to become a leader with integrity and to fulfil the country’s needs for having quality leaders, he said in a speech.

“By finding positive ways to care for others we add value to our own lives. We feel more engaged with others and generate a more constructive and healthy way of living with others and therefore improve the quality of life for everyone.”

A good leader will always care about his peers, provide a supportive, caring environment and a way of improving the atmosphere in a positive and beneficial way, said Hamiz ‘Abdulhadi.

A good leader will take care of the surrounding community and society through charity and voluntary work, he added.

“Through involving ourselves in charity work, we gain not only new skills and networking opportunities but also enhance our quality of life. However we must start by improving ourselves first.”

Thirty-one students from higher education institutions in the country are participating in the programme namely students from UTB, Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD), Universiti Islam Sultan Sharif Ali (UNISSA) and Politeknik Brunei.

For three days and four nights the participants will be camping at the Berakas Forest Reserve where they will take part in several activities.

Among the activities is visiting Pusat Ehsan and conducting activities with the students of the centre.

Present as the guest of honour during the ceremony was UTB’s Dean of Student Affairs, Joffry Hj Bungsu.
