THE Council on Social Welfare (MKM) yesterday held an event to distribute 500 boxes of clothes to the poor and needy from Tutong and Belait districts.

The aim of the event, held at the Serambangun Multi-Purpose Hall in Tutong, was to provide clothing for them to use for the coming month of Syawal, during which Hari Raya Aidil Fitri is celebrated.

According to MKM’s secretary, Hamidah Lakem, they have been receiving boxes of good used clothes since January.

Following a successful event in Temburong, she said they decided to “share the happiness with the underprivileged in Tutong and Belait”.

“At least with the donated clothes they will be able to save money by not having to spend on new clothes,” she said.

According to Hamidah, due to the overwhelming response and number of boxes that needed to be distributed, they had to seek assistance from Universiti Brunei Darussalam undergraduates as well as youths from Tutong.

She added that the clothes had to be sorted by size and labelled ‘male’ or ‘female’ and also for formal or daily wear for children and adults.

“Today we are donating to 60 families and looking at more than 300 recipients,” she said.

During the event, they opened the doors of the hall to welcome individuals to choose from the donated clothes.

MKM, which was founded in 2009, also assists in addressing social issues of five core groups including children, people with disabilities, the elderly, the needy and vulnerable families.

The council recently moved into its new office at Melabau Complex in Serusop after a sponsor came forward to help.
