VILLAGE head of Lubok Pulau, Tutong, yesterday expressed satisfaction with the upgrading of a 2.5km stretch in Tanjong Maya to prevent flooding at low-lying areas.

Hj Abd Rahman Samad said that the project was completed about four years ago.

Before the upgrade project was completed, over half of the 134 houses in the village would experience flooding during heavy rain.

“With the upgrading of road, the area now no longer floods,” said Hj Abd Rahman, whose house was visited by His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah, the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam, after a key-handover ceremony in the multi-purpose hall of Tanjong Maya Secondary School.

The upgrade project saw the relevant government agencies clear the drainage, while the villagers were also reminded not to throw rubbish into the river, said the village head.

Other enhancement of public infrastructure in the area include 100 per cent water access and electricity services, he said.

The village head also informed the monarch on the number of villagers who are currently receiving assistance from the government.

There are 104 recipients of old-age pension, 16 recipients of the Department of Community Development’s (JAPEM) assistance and 13 recipients of the persons with disabilities’ assistance.

Currently, there are a total of 1,215 villagers living in Lubok Pulau Village.
