YSHHB donates $14,100 to fire, disaster victims
BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN
YAYASAN Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah (YSHHB) donated a total of $14,100 yesterday to four families from three districts whose homes were damaged or destroyed due to fires and natural disasters.
King Sau Yen told _The Brunei Times _that two weeks ago, a forest fire in Tutong left her parents and mentally disabled brother homeless, and they are now temporarily living with her own family.
Yen attended the donation ceremony on behalf of her father, 64-year-old King Chiew Phang, who was out of the country.
She added that several important documents were lost in the fire, further complicating the process of rebuilding the house, which is already problematic due to the rising cost of building materials. Contractors are asking upwards of $20,000 to build a small house.
While the donation isn’t enough to cover the cost of rebuilding, they are looking for alternative ways to rebuild the house by getting help from relatives, she said.
Yen added that her father is under pressure to get a new house built soon as they would prefer to stay in their own house and look after her brother, who is unable to live with anyone else besides his parents.
Another recipient, Hjh Zaliha Hj Safar from Brunei-Muara district, said she was grateful for the donation from YSHHB, which has lightened their burden as her husband is unemployed due to illness.
Hjh Zaliha said a fire had engulfed their storeroom and living room where her husband rests, and as a result, her husband now shares a room with their son.
She said her husband, who has kidney bproblems and is wheelchair bound, has been unable to move upstairs as there is no bathroom there. With this donation, as well as help from others, she hopes to get the rooms repaired soon.
During the event yesterday, Temburong residents Awang Anuar Abdullah and Dayang Norhani Mohammad Salleh also received donations, which were presented by YSHHB Managing Director Hj Brahim Hj Ismail.
