THE second National Savings Day 2016 roadshow was held yesterday at Yayasan Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Primary School which attracted more than 100 students from Brunei-Muara district.

The roadshow was organised by the Autoriti Monetari Brunei Darussalam (AMBD) in collaboration with the Ministry of Education (MoE) and the Employees Trust Fund (TAP).

The theme for this year’s roadshow is ‘Financially Literate Generation’ which aims to create individuals who are more financially aware and financially vigilant through increased awareness of financial independence.

Speaking to local media, Nurhuaida Fakhriah Damit, senior manager of Monetary Management at AMBD, said the target audience for the roadshow is primary school students so these children will be able to take it upon themselves to nurture a culture of saving money at a young age.

She added that AMBD, TAP as well as financial institutions such as Baiduri Bank were participating in the roadshow to provide entertaining games for the children that will teach them financial management.

“The activities chosen for the children are simple activities that they can easily grasp and involve financial management lessons that we use in our daily lives such as budgeting by knowing which shops sell the cheapest products,” she said.

Nurhuaida said that since it was the second day of the roadshow, the first one being conducted last week, the reception from the students has been very positive.

“I’ve heard from my colleagues and participants (in the roadshow) that most of the young children are aware that if they want something, they have to start saving their own money, which is very encouraging,” she said.

“Hopefully through these roadshows, these children can learn to differentiate between their needs and wants as well as the significance of saving,” added Nurhuaida.

According to a press release, AMBD will hold roadshows in Belait and Tutong districts on May 16 and May 18 respectively.

Other events planned in conjunction with National Savings Day 2016 include a Financial Fun Fair which will be held at Jerudong Park Colonnade on May 22 from 3pm to 9pm.

Financial Planners’ Day will also be held on May 26, organised by the Centre for Islamic Banking and Management (CIBFM), followed by a Financial Planners’ Showcase on May 28.
