THE Department of Information is conducting roadshows for secondary schools across the country to raise awareness of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).

Yesterday, a roadshow was held at the Rimba I Secondary School gathering more than 500 of its students from Year 7, 8 and 9.

“We are trying to cover all schools in Brunei within three years. This year, we are planning to have it for 16 schools, focusing first on the Brunei-Muara District,” said Abdul Karim Hamdan, Special Duties Officer as head of the International Affairs Unit at the Information Department during an interview on the sidelines of the roadshow.

According to Abdul Karim, this is the ninth school that the department has conducted the roadshow.

Previous schools that they have visited include Awang Semaun Secondary School, Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddien (SOAS) College and St Andrew’s School among others.

The next roadshow will be held tomorrow at the Sultan Sharif Ali Secondary School (SMSSA).

Abdul Karim said that the objective of these roadshows is to provide exposure and enhance the knowledge of ASEAN among secondary school students.

“Not all students are aware of ASEAN so this is why we want to promote ASEAN,” said Abdul Karim adding that the focus will be on Year 7, 8 and 9 students.

The roadshow is organised by Department of Information through its International Affairs Unit as secretariat for the ASEAN Committee for Culture and Information (ASEAN-COCI) sub-committee of information (SCI).

During the event, Hjh Noorhijrah Hj Idris, Assistant Information Officer of the International Affairs Unit at the Information Department gave a briefing about the objectives of ASEAN to students.

The briefing also provided information about Brunei’s Vision 2035 including various statistics on Brunei and countries in the ASEAN region.

After the briefing, a quiz was held to test students’ knowledge on ASEAN. Participants of the quiz were awarded gifts which was presented by the guest-of-honour Norjalina Hj Jaafar, Deputy Principal of Administration of Rimba I Secondary School.
