BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN
A DELEGATION of 10 youth from the Republic of Korea arrived in the sultanate yesterday to participate in the 5th Bilaterial Youth Exchange Programme 2016 that will run from May 10 to 19.
Present to welcome the delegation at the Brunei International Airport were officers from the Youth and Sports Department (JBS), as well as an official from the Embassy of the Republic of Korea, Mi-Yeon Kwon.
Chief Officer at the Youth and Sports Department Hjh Noor Maslina Hj Sulaiman said the programme hopes to provide an opportunity for the visitors to experience the culture and lifestyle of Bruneians. It also hopes to strengthen the relationship between the two countries.
The official listed some places that the participants will visit during their 10-day stay in the sultanate.
“The participants will visit paddy fields in Tutong (so) that they can have a first hand experience at farming and observe the rice cultivation in Brunei,” she said, adding that the delegates will also visit two Village Consultative Councils (MPK) – Seria and Kg Kiudang.
The visitors comprised Korean youth aged 20-25 from various universities.
One of the delegates, Kim Yong Jin, said that the trip to Brunei was an opportunity for them to get more exposure on the different cultural activities in ASEAN countries.
“This is the first time I (am visiting) Brunei. From my research, I could see that Brunei has a unique structure when it comes to its economy and religion. Hopefully, through this programme, we will be able to gain new knowledge for our studies,” said the 20-year-old Political Sciences student.
Brunei and Korea signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) in 2009 for the cultural exchange programme.
The MoU hopes to allow the youth of both countries to learn and develop an understanding of each other’s cultural, social economy and political matters.
Today, the participants will meet with Minister of Youth, Culture and Sport Yang Berhormat Pehin Datu Lailaraja Major General (Rtd) Dato Paduka Seri Hj Awang Halbi Hj Mohd Yusof at DiGadong Hall in Jalan Kebangsaan.
