‘Communication crucial in disaster situations’
EMERGENCY responder agencies should communicate closely with the public – especially in relaying current updates on certain incident – as it may affect their safety.
Minister of Communications Yang Berhormat Dato Paduka Hj Mustappa Hj Sirat said that correct and updated information needs to be delivered to the public so they will know what to do and what to expect.
The public, said the minister, would like to see more transparency in the process of managing the incidents, so it is important for the emergency responders to efficiently assess the disaster situations, especially in determining the public’s danger levels.
“This is something that needs to be communicated to the public,” he said.
The minister said he is aware of the possibility of unverified messages spreading fast through social media.
“It is something that can not be stopped, so the best you can do is to keep the public informed (on the situation) as much as possible,” he said.
“The more we communicate with the public, the better it is, especially when it (concerns) their safety and security,” he added.
